Staff researcher on experimental surface science, with some administration experience (former director of the IQFR institute, and involved in several scientific societies). I like to see film growth happen in real time and real space, so far through the use of low-energy electron microscopies in ultra high vacuum. Research themes are dynamic studies on surfaces, film growth of metals and oxides (more soon), and studies of surface magnetization vector with nanometer resolution.

Leader of the Modeling for Theoretical Catalysis Group at the ICP-CSIC. She and her Group conducts research into surface chemistry and physics as well as fundamentals of catalytic reactions at metal surfaces, metal oxide surfaces and supported oxide and metal catalysts, providing deep insight in the structure-function relationships of catalytic materials for energy and environmental applications.

Biography
Since 2011, Ana Borras is a tenured scientist in the Spanish National Scientific Council (CSIC).
After completing her Ph. D. at the University of Seville (2007), she moved to EMPA-ETH Thun to synthesise small-molecule nanowires and organic nanocomposite thin films.
She currently belongs to the Nanotechnology on Surfaces Laboratory of the Materials Science Institute of Seville (ICMS), where she leads the research line Multifunctional One Dimensional Nanomaterials devoted to the development and applications of complex hybrid and heterostructured 1D and 3D materials fabricated by vacuum and plasma deposition methods.
Ana Borras holds the ERC Starting Grant 3DScavengers aimed at the fabrication of multisource energy harvesters and hybrid nanogenerators. Besides, she is the international coordinator of the FET-Open project SOUNDofICE for the demonstration of a pioneering strategy based on the surface engineering of MHz Acoustic Waves for a smart and sustainable removal of ice, with impacts in aeronautics and wind energy.
She has more than 100 articles with h-index 31, and contributions to D1 journals, including Progress in Materials Science, Advanced Materials, Advanced Energy Materials, Advanced Functional Materials, Nano Energy, Chemistry of Materials, ACS Appl. Mat. Interf, Nanoscale and J. Physical Chemistry C. She has participated in and led more than 20 projects for the Industry. She has co-authored 5 patents, and supervised 4 PhD Theses.
She has been appointed Spanish representative of the IUVSTA (Plasma Science and Technology Division), co-chair of the Online Low-Temperature Plasma seminars and is a member of the Plasma Nanoscience Foundation (iPlasmaNano).

Graduado en Química en la Universidad Central de Venezuela en 1989. Doctorado en el Institut für Physikalische und Theoretische Chemie der Universität Bonn, Alemania. En 1997, después del doctorado, se trasladó al Institut für Experimentalphysik der Freie Universität Berlin para realizar una estancia postdoctoral, y de 2001 a 2002 al Grupo de Microscopía de Efecto Túnel de Barrido a Baja Temperatura en el Fritz-Haber-Institut der MaxPlanck-Gesellschaft, también en Berlín. De 2002 a 2006, investigador científico en el XSTM y STM de baja temperatura en el Laboratorio Nazionale TASC-INFM, Trieste, Italia.
En 2007 obtuvo un puesto de científico senior en el Instituto Catalán de Nanotecnología (ICN) en Barcelona, España. Inició la creación de la División de Desarrollo de Instrumentos de Nanociencia, una plataforma científica y técnica integrada para abordar proyectos instrumentales innovadores en la investigación básica, así como en la tecnología aplicada.
En 2010 fue nombrado Jefe de las Divisiones de Apoyo a la Investigación en el ICN2 (antiguo ICN) liderando un equipo de 12 científicos y técnicos especializados que cubren el apoyo a la investigación en varias áreas estratégicas como el desarrollo de instrumentación para la investigación básica y tecnológica, la caracterización avanzada por microscopía electrónica, la nanofabricación, las técnicas avanzadas para el crecimiento de materiales nanoestructurados, y los laboratorios de caracterización.
